Endoscopic (retroperitoneoscopic) lumbar sympathectomy is the surgical treatment for plantar hyperhidrosis (sweaty feet). This treatment is the only option to achieve a permanent resolution of a benign condition which causes a significant decrease in Q-o-L of patients. There are medical treatments available, but none offers a long-term effect. For more information please read my previous post of 26 January 2019 entitled: Do you have plantar hyperhidrosis? Think about retroperitoneoscopic lumbar sympathectomy.
We are performing this surgery for a long time in General Surgery Department (E) of CHUC-HG (Covões) in Coimbra, Portugal. It can be offered to treat plantar hyperhidrosis but also in cases of lower limb ischaemia grade ≥ 3 without indication or possibility for revascularization. In this latter setting it is a final resource to control pain and avoid major amputation.
I now present a video of a bilateral endoscopic lumbar sympathectomy performed to treat a patient with plantar hyperhidrosis. The patient was experiencing a negative impact in Q-o-L reason why was seeking this treatment with anxiety but also with great enthusiasm.
Enjoy!
Attention!
If you have a patient with lower limb ischaemia grade ≥ 3 without possibility for revascularization please postpone amputation, this can be an option.
