NEMODAY is a hands-on course dedicated to Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring (IONM) in thyroid surgery. Hosted by the Department of Head & Neck Surgery (Chair: Dr. Paula Messias) at IPO Coimbra, Portugal, and organized by Dr. Carlos E. Costa Almeida, the course combines a solid theoretical foundation with direct participation in live thyroid surgery, allowing attendees to experience real-time IONM in clinical practice.
IONM is a valuable adjunct that facilitates identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and helps preserve its function during thyroid surgery. Its use contributes to reducing the risk of nerve injury and its associated complications, including voice changes, swallowing difficulties, and, in severe cases, the need for tracheostomy.
