During the last two days (18–19 June 2026), we hosted the Masterclasses in Parathyroid Surgery. Organized by the Department of Head & Neck Surgery of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Coimbra (Chair: Dr. Paula Messias; Organizer: Dr. Carlos E. Costa Almeida), this meeting was a tremendous success.
The high-quality lectures, followed by outstanding discussions, were only possible thanks to the presence of some of the world's leading experts in parathyroid surgery. Topics extensively discussed included indications for surgery, localization studies, ICG, NIRAF, IONM, radioguided surgery, bilateral neck exploration, indications for re-exploration, failure to meet the Miami Criteria, total versus subtotal parathyroidectomy, decision-making regarding the parathyroid remnant, anterior and backdoor approaches, as well as TOEPVA and transaxillary approaches.
The meeting concluded with a memorable lecture on targeted parathyroidectomy under loco-regional anaesthesia. No one will forget the video showing a patient singing opera while undergoing surgery. It was truly an inspiring lecture.
These two days of outstanding scientific exchange were only possible because of our exceptional faculty. More than renowned experts, they are also good friends. The friendly, engaging atmosphere led to productive discussions and insights that will influence our daily clinical practice.
To those who filled the room, thank you for your enthusiasm and commitment to learning from one another's experience. Your participation made this meeting possible. Spread the word and join us again next year.
The Masterclasses in Parathyroid Surgery were not only about science. Four social events also provided opportunities for networking and informal discussions. Among them, I would particularly highlight the musical moment during the welcome dinner. Traditional Coimbra fado filled our hearts and offered a beautiful glimpse into the city's rich cultural heritage.
In the end, we all left not only with new knowledge, but also as good friends, carrying memories that will stay with us for years to come. Isn't that one of the true aims of life?
See you next year for the Masterclasses of "drama"... Stay tuned!
