Neuromonitoring in thyroid and parotid surgery is now the gold standard. Protecting the RLN and the EBSLN during thyroid surgery aims at preserving the voice, the swallowing, and the breathing. On the other hand, protecting the facial nerve during parotid surgery aims at preserving the facial mimic and the facial esthetic.
In these settings, neuromonitoring can help you find the nerves, map their path, and preserve their function while performing fine dissection. Nowadays, I am using neuromonitoring systematically in thyroid surgery and parotid surgery. A well-performed neuromonitoring is a crucial complement for nerve preservation. In my daily clinical practice, there is no place for surgery without neuromonitoring.
In 2023 the idea came to my mind. How about a book where the practical and essential aspects of neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery and parotid surgery could be easily available to surgeons? We must do it! The following step was inviting two fantastic surgeons with huge expertise in neuromonitoring. Prof Maurizio Iacobone and Dr. Francesca Torresan, from Padova (Italy), accepted my challenge and picked up the "train" for editing this book. Once again, friendship and professionalism joined to do something great. The idea of the book was sent to Springer, and acceptance for publication came "fast and furious". More than one year of hard work followed, but the result is coming!
"Neuromonitoring in Thyroid and Parotid Surgery. A practical guide." (Carlos E. Costa Almeida, Maurizio Iacobone, Francesca Torresan Editors) edited by Springer will be available in mid-2025. A magnificent group of experts in thyroid surgery and parotid surgery wrote the 20 chapters of the book. Türkiye (I higlight the important help provided by Dr. Ozer Makay), Portugal, Spain and Italy are very well represented with good friends and magnificent surgeons. This book is written in an easy-to-read format, and it "is the expert all surgeons need to correctly use neuromonitoring in thyroid and parotid surgery."
